With the cold and flu season approaching, you might find yourself ailed with the dreaded sore throat. It’s amazing that until it hurts you don’t realize how often you use it. Most often a sore throat will pass in a few days, but during that time you will mostly likely want to find relief sooner.

A sore throat is usually a symptom of another condition. They are normally caused by viral infections, like the common cold, and also by Bacterial infections; especially Streptococcus infection. In addition, irritants, like dust, smoke, fumes or tooth or gum infections, can also cause sore throats. Chronic Coughing can also irritation.

Other disorders may include flu, mononucleosis, Epstein-Barr or herpes simplex. A sore throat may also indicate an abscess around the throat area, diphtheria, gingivitis or laryngeal cancer.

It is important that if a sore throat persists that you seek the advice of a physician, as the cause may need medical attention.

When the first signs of throat irritation occur there are a few supplements and herbs that can offer some relief.

Acidophilus - helps to replenish “friendly” bacteria, especially if you are taking antibiotics, because antibiotics can also be harmful to the body’s good bacteria.

Bee Propolis - protects the mucus membrane on the throat and mouth.

Zinc lozenges - sooth the pain and help boost the immune system.

Other immune boosters are vitamins C, A and E, garlic and Echinacea and goldenseal (be sure to follow directions carefully when taking goldenseal).

Slippery Elm is very soothing for a scratchy throat and licorice is also good for soothing and relieving a horse throat.

Raspberry tea is another way to relieve a scratchy irritated throat. A good trick is to add honey and lemon, as well.

A good tip, if you are taking antibiotics, along with acidophilus, is to eat plenty of yogurt. Yogurt also contains “friendly” bacteria. If you take acidophilus, do not take it at the same time as the antibiotic.

It is also important to change your toothbrush and bed lines regularly, especially if are suffering from a sore throat caused by a cold or flu.

Remember, prevention is the best medicine, be sure to take care of yourself this season, by getting plenty of rest, exercise and eating well.
