Poetry

by Bari Newport

She

She looked at her palm one day
and noticed
that it had changed
into someone else’s

And she wasn’t sure what that meant, exactly
who that meant she was, exactly
whose life-line she had been following
all of these years

And it scared the shit out of her-
Really blew her mind-

And she vowed
silently, secretly to herself
that she would never turn her hand over again
that destiny is often a rock better to
leave unturned

So she got a manicure
long, red nails
acrylic (of course)
(they last longer)
And every two weeks
she got them filled

And she’d get compliments
How nice your nails are!
And she’d smile
and admire her hands-
And know that they really weren’t hers
at all
